Youth Line Forum Launches New Project- Generation Next -Gnext

The Generation Next (GNext) initiative was conceived as a regional program to promote the emergence of active University scholarship. The idea is to create a strong movement of University scholars across the East African region that can defend their rights and stand in solidarity with each other on shared objectives.

Background

In many parts of Africa, University systems are in a crisis, squalid conditions, students strife and increasing state violence that have turned Universities into battle grounds. Governments have increasingly attempted to control these Universities through patronage, surveillance and violence and using other institutional configurations to facilitate their rife. As a result the product from these Universities are docile and the lack of student activism has bred students that can no longer effectively defend their rights.

Bogus policies have been introduced in institutions of higher learning, exorbitant and unfair fees are levied without any explanation, yet studentscontinue to study under harsh conditions like poor welfare. As a result Universities are producing low quality, docile, pathetic, poltically unconscious and civically incompetent.

Long term Goal.

The Goal of GNext Initiative is “Active University scholars in East African region”. The idea is that with a cohort of civically competent and proactive intellectuals; that are networked and unified to push back against closing of civic space in East Africa.
